Students ‘Pin Some Positivity’ with the Health Sciences Libraries at Rowan-Virtua SOM’s Fresh Check Day

On Wednesday, September 3, the Rowan Virtua-SOM Health Sciences Libraries participated in Fresh Check Day, a wellness event organized by the Office of Student Affairs & Alumni Engagement. Held under sunny skies at the Stratford Campus, the event offered students access to mental health resources, games, snacks, and wellness booths, with clubs and departments across the School of Osteopathic Medicine hosting activities tailored to student wellness.

The libraries’ booth was a highlight, attracting eager students. Library staff distributed pre-made pins and allowed students to create their own, each featuring positive messages, affirmations, and uplifting imagery. These pins served as tangible reminders of positivity for students to keep or give to a friend.

“I think Fresh Check Day is an opportunity to show up for students and demonstrate that we care about them not just academically within the library but as a whole,” said Nicole Morfitt, Access Services Supervisor at the library.

The library staff appreciated the positive reception and the opportunity to connect with students outside the traditional library setting. “It was great to see the students choosing their designs and enjoying conversations with one another,” said Stacy McGuigan, Staff Assistant at the library.

Alexis Scott, Associate Director of Student Programs & Engagement, appreciated the library’s involvement, writing, “The students LOVED the pin activity. The interactive booth and the library’s support truly embodied the spirit of Fresh Check Day.”

Beyond its extensive study resources, the library encourages students to take wellness breaks by borrowing its sports equipment, board games, or free passes to Philadelphia’s Mütter Museum.
